According to maternitytips.us, Franklin County, New York is a county located in the north-central part of the state. It was established in 1808 and is named after Benjamin Franklin. It is bordered by St. Lawrence County to the north, Clinton County to the east, Essex County to the southeast, Hamilton County to the south and Fulton County to the west. The county seat is Malone and it has a population of 51,134 as of 2018. The area now known as Franklin County was originally inhabited by Native Americans including the Mohawk, Abenaki and Iroquois tribes. In 1782 it became part of Clinton County when that county was created from parts of Albany and Charlotte counties. In 1797 it became part of St. Lawrence County when that county was formed from parts of Herkimer and Montgomery counties. The creation of Franklin County was authorized by an act passed by the New York State Legislature on April 2, 1808 and it was officially organized on April 4th that same year with Malone becoming its first county seat. The boundaries were adjusted slightly in 1810 after disputes over land claims between New York State and Massachusetts were resolved with Massachusetts receiving a portion of what would have been Franklin’s northern boundary. In its early years, Franklin County had a thriving lumber industry due to its abundance of timber resources which were used for construction projects throughout New York State and beyond. Agriculture also played a role in its development with crops such as potatoes, grains, hay and apples being grown for local markets as well as for export out of nearby ports on Lake Champlain or along the St Lawrence River. In addition to agriculture and forestry, manufacturing began to play an increasingly important role in Franklin’s economy during the late 19th century with factories producing goods such as textiles, paper products and foodstuffs becoming more commonplace throughout the region. This trend continued into the 20th century with additional industries such as automotive components manufacturing being added to its economic foundation during this time period as well. Today, Franklin continues to be an important agricultural center with many farms producing dairy products while still being home to several industries including plastics manufacturing facilities and paper mills among others making it an important contributor to New York State’s economy overall. The school district of Franklin County, New York serves the educational needs of the county’s roughly 50,000 residents. The district is a single-county school system that includes several municipalities and townships and is divided into three regions: the Northern Region, the Central Region, and the Southern Region. All schools offer core classes in English language arts and math as well as science and social studies courses. In addition to these core classes many schools also provide elective courses such as art or music as well as career and technical education courses in fields such as healthcare or automotive technology.
