According to maternitytips.us, Cottonwood County, Minnesota is located in the southwestern corner of the state and borders Iowa and South Dakota. The county was first settled in 1854 by German immigrants who established a small farming community near the town of Windom. By 1860, the population had grown to 845 people, and the county was officially established in 1862. Throughout its history, Cottonwood County has been an agricultural center, producing mainly corn and other grains. In addition to farming, mining was also an important industry in the area during the late 19th century. The first mine opened in 1877 and by 1880 there were six active mines operating in Cottonwood County. The railroad also played a major role in Cottonwood County’s development as it connected the county to other parts of Minnesota as well as Iowa and South Dakota. This allowed for increased trade between towns and cities throughout the region. Today, Cottonwood County is home to roughly 16,000 people spread across its 647 square miles. It is still largely agricultural with many farms producing corn, soybeans, hay, wheat and oats for both local consumption and export markets. In addition to farming there are several manufacturing companies located throughout the county that produce a variety of products ranging from furniture to electronics. Cottonwood County has a rich cultural heritage with many festivals held throughout the year that celebrate its diverse history including German-American Day held each August in Windom as well as various Native American powwows held throughout summer months at various locations around the county. Cottonwood County, Minnesota is served by three school districts: Windom, Mountain Lake and Westbrook-Walnut Grove. The Windom School District is the largest in the county and serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district consists of two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district is committed to providing students with an excellent education that prepares them for college and future careers. It also offers a variety of extracurricular activities and clubs such as band, choir, sports teams, theater productions and student government. The Mountain Lake School District serves students from pre-K through 12th grade in various towns including Mountain Lake, Butterfield, Bingham Lake and Westbrook. This small district offers a comprehensive curriculum along with extracurricular activities such as sports teams, band, choir and drama clubs. Finally, the Westbrook-Walnut Grove School District serves students from pre-K through 12th grade in the towns of Westbrook and Walnut Grove. This small district emphasizes academic excellence as well as character development through their Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports program. In addition to its rigorous curriculum it also offers a variety of extracurricular activities including band, choir theatre productions and sports teams. Overall, Cottonwood County provides its students with quality educational opportunities that prepare them for success in college or career paths after graduation.
