Since its incorporation in 1854, the county has been an integral part of Maine’s history. The area was first inhabited by the Abenaki Indians before being settled by Europeans in the early 1600s. In 1820, Androscoggin County was officially established with Lewiston as its county seat. The largest district is RSU 10 which consists of the towns of Auburn, Poland and Mechanic Falls. This district operates 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools and offers a wide range of educational programs including Advanced Placement classes, special education services, and extra-curricular activities. The second largest district in Androscoggin County is MSAD 60 which serves the towns of Lisbon, Turner, and Leeds. This district operates 5 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school as well as a number of specialized programs such as alternative education and early childhood education. Both RSU 10 and MSAD 60 are members of the Maine School Management Association (MSMA). Additionally, Androscoggin County also includes several smaller districts that serve the area’s rural communities including SAD 36 which serves Durham, Lisbon Falls, Minot and Sabattus; SAD 49 which serves Greene; SAD 52 which serves Jay; SAD 53 which serves Livermore Falls; SAD 54 which serves Wilton; SAD 55 which serves Dixfield; and SAD 56 which serves Bethel. Each district offers its own unique educational opportunities while also sharing a commitment to providing quality education for all students in Androscoggin County. Each district works closely with local businesses to provide job training opportunities for its graduates as well as with community organizations to provide access to resources such as after-school programs and summer camps.
