It was established in 1867 and named for the Comanche Native American tribe that once lived in the area. The county was originally home to small farming communities, but its population increased significantly during the late 19th century due to an influx of settlers from other parts of Kansas as well as from Oklahoma and Texas. The first settlement in Comanche County was Fort Harker, which was established by the United States Army in 1866.
