Located in the heart of Georgia, the county was first formed in 1777 from parts of Richmond and Screven Counties. Burke County was named for Edmund Burke, a prominent statesman from Ireland who served as a member of the British Parliament at the time. The county has been home to many notable figures throughout its history, including James Oglethorpe, who founded the colony of Georgia in 1733; William Few, one of Georgia’s three signers of the United States Constitution; and William Houstoun, an early leader in Georgia politics. Burke County was an important part of the cotton industry before and during the Civil War. The county was home to several large plantations that produced large amounts of cotton for export to other states and countries. After emancipation, African Americans made up a significant part of Burke County’s population as they sought economic opportunity and freedom from oppression. Today, Burke County is still known for its agricultural roots but is also home to many other thriving industries such as manufacturing and tourism. The county is also home to several historic sites that are popular tourist attractions such as Magnolia Springs State Park and Fort Callaway Monument which commemorate important moments in Burke County’s history. Burke County Public Schools is the local school district for the county. The district is comprised of 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. The district also offers a number of alternative education programs including an Adult Education program and an Exceptional Student Education program. The Burke County Public School District is committed to providing a high-quality education to its students. The district has implemented a variety of initiatives to ensure that students receive the best possible educational experience, including innovative technology programs and specialized learning opportunities such as career academies and dual enrollment courses. In addition to its traditional public school system, Burke County also has several private schools available for families who wish to pursue an alternative educational path. These include Father Lopez Catholic High School and Stetson University’s Flagler College which offer a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for college or the workforce. Overall, Burke County provides a wide range of educational opportunities for its residents that meet their needs while preparing them for future success in college or a career path they choose to pursue.
