The area was originally inhabited by the Chilkoot and Chilkat Tlingit Native American tribes, who lived off of the abundant natural resources found in the area. In 1897, Skagway became a boomtown when gold was discovered in nearby rivers and mountains. Thousands of prospectors flocked to Skagway in search of gold, transforming it into a bustling port city with a population of over 10,000. Skagway’s economy continued to thrive with the arrival of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad in 1898. This railroad connected Skagway to Canada’s Yukon Territory and allowed for easy transportation of people and goods between Alaska and Canada. The railroad also helped create a booming tourism industry as people from all over began traveling to Skagway to experience its unique culture and history. In 1900, Skagway was officially incorporated as a borough, making it one of Alaska’s earliest settlements. The borough has since grown into an important center for trade and tourism with its port still serving as an important stopover point for cruise ships traveling between Alaska and Canada. Today, Skagway is home to many historical sites such as Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park which celebrates its role in this period of American history. The Skagway Borough School District is responsible for providing educational services to the students of Skagway, Alaska. The district serves approximately 500 students in grades K-12, and is managed by a seven-member school board. The district operates three schools: Skagway Elementary School, Skagway High School, and Haines Alternative Education Center. Skagway Elementary School provides education for kindergarten through sixth grade students with a focus on providing an engaging learning environment that encourages critical thinking and problem solving. The school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports teams, clubs, and student organizations. Skagway High School offers students an array of academic courses as well as career and technical education programs to prepare them for success after graduation.
