Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, New York

Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum (New York, USA) — expositions, opening hours, address, phone numbers, official website.

Unique in its kind throughout America, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum has over 250,000 items. And all this wealth is located in the luxurious 64-room mansion of the millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The name of the museum, by the way, came from the Hewitt sisters, who, inspired by similar meetings in Europe, decided to create something similar in their homeland. I have to say, it turned out great. See itypetravel for geostatistics of Missouri.

Carnegie, who bequeathed his house to the museum, was always interested in design and modern technology. For example, he was one of the first to equip his estate with a heating and air conditioning system, built an electric home elevator into the building – which at that time was considered a real revolution.

Today, in the western part of the hall there is a gallery, which was previously his studio. Pay attention to the low doorway – the fact is that Andrew was not tall, about 157 cm.

In addition to this studio-gallery, the ground floor also houses the Music Room, the garden lobby with amazing Tiffany stained glass windows, and the Dining Room, where Washington, Mark Twain, and the charming Madame Curie have been.

The motto of this museum is simple: “Design to life”. Perhaps that is why utterly eccentric, but terribly interesting exhibitions are organized here. For example, dedicated to a dog kennel or household items. Eminent architects and designers do not shy away from dreaming up on the theme of a dog house to exhibit their work at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.

Every three years, the National Design Triennial is held here – an exhibition of the best creations of American designers.

Verrazano Bridge

Verrazano Bridge (USA) – description, history, location. Exact address, phone number, website. Reviews of tourists, photos and videos.

Ships enter New York Harbor under the floating Verrazano Bridge that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island. Before it was put into operation in 1964, the inhabitants of this area had only ever-crowded ferries, and during winter storms even they were canceled, it took hours to wait for a lull. The grandiose construction put an end to weather dependence, but not completely, in severe weather, traffic on the bridge is still prohibited. It was named after the Italian Giovanni Verrazano, the first European who allegedly entered the Hudson River on his sailboat.

What to watch

211-meter towers are visible from almost everywhere, between them a two-tier span 1.3 km long is suspended on cables, two more 370 m each connect them to the shores. The structure is so huge that the designers had to take into account the curvature of the earth’s surface. The developers of sea vessels have also added a headache, now they are forced to remember the height of the Verrazano bridge if they plan to call the ship being designed in New York. The newest liner Queen Mary 2, for example, passes under it literally back to back.

Pedestrians are allowed on the bridge only on the first Sunday in November for the start of the New York City Marathon. There are so many people who want to run that they organize a lottery, the prize in which is an entrance ticket. The views from the top are stunning.
